The higher up they got the more the wind pushed back on them. The ice crept down the mountain to where they were. Snow flurries wisped around them. It was now a climb, still not as bad as Lennox thought it would be. It could be worse.

The spikes hidden in the soles of their boots shot out. Sky and Lennox tested their limits as they dug the spikes into the mountain as much as their strength would allow. Sky’s hands grabbed the massive rock first, then Lennox’s followed. They were moving slower now and their suits triggered warnings. Their breathing became labored and their bodies weary.

“We are about to lose spaces to grab hold of,” Sky shouted over the wind and snow. His breaths were short, but he continued, “We are going to need our adaptor blades, they will turn into the ice picks we need. I hope.”

He dug his spikes farther into the risen earth, holding on with one hand and with the other reached to his belt to unlatch the blade. He slung it up through the air with great force and it adapted into the sharp ice pick he needed. It slammed into the side of the mountain holding Sky’s weight with ease. It was Lennox’s turn. She dug her spikes in just as he did and secured her body weight. She clung to the rock above her as tight as her fingers would cling and let go with her other to reach for the blade that was latched to her belt.

As soon as she let go she felt her body slip. She was not as strong as Sky and she was already weak from traveling such long distances. One hand was not enough to hold her. With the colors still dancing in the night, she was falling farther and farther down. The rope that tethered her to Sky was unraveling. It would only be seconds before the rope ran out. She would pull Sky right down with her. As she slid down the mountain she scrambled to grab hold of something.

Anything.

Her body bounced down the jagged edges of the steep rock. The fibers of her suit could not withstand the blows. She wanted to scream, but her voice could not be found.

Through the chaos she heard Sky yell, “The blade, grab your blade!”

She only had milliseconds left. She fumbled through the gear on her belt and found the blade. She unlatched it and slung it toward the icy rock. It caught, but not well enough.

She was still sliding down. Both her hands were wrapped around the handle of the blade. Her mind was occupied with the upper half of her body, when she needed to focus on the bottom half.

Through groans and with everything in her she commanded her legs to be firm and her feet to be strong as she hurled them into the ice one at a time to regain stability. She did, in the nick of time. The rope was only a foot from being completely unraveled.
